44th Red Moshannon down river race
So this weekend was the 44th annual Red Mo down river race. A grass roots race with the most diverse group of paddlers to be found anywhere. Well or at least in Grassflats PA on this 28 degree day. So with the classes ranging from short canoes, to wildwater boats if you paddle you can find a class you will fit just about anything thing that floats. Tussy Mt outfitters has been the host to this event and a great promoter of down river racing. Tussy Mt outfitters should get credit for getting a bunch of river bums to the river, on the river in good time, and show you a good time at the end. If you have not been to this event yet check your calender for next spring.
See you on the water! O and I got 1st K1 long in the fastest plastic kayak on the market the Pyranha Speeder

Busy California
The title rings true in so many ways. Â But lately, “in a boating way” – even more so. Â Cali goes hand in hand with SUNSHINE and GRANITE. Â But given that some end-of-the-world storms have been blasting us this winter, it is now RAIN and BASALT. Â So staying indoors, breaking out the maps and exploring some new low elevation runs, is the name of the game. (and by low I mean low as in 200′ above sea level). Â So here is video and here for more words and pictures. The sun finally broke out yesterday, yeah.

Taugl River Gorge
The Taugl-river is a small creek near Salzburg in Austria.
The river flows through a very deep, 8 kilometer long Gorge. There is only one Brige in the middle where you can have a look on the river.
The best thing about this river is, that you can have totally new rapids after every flood . So its always very challenging not to know whats araoun the next corner …. On those 8 kilometers there is only one way to exit.. the rest are must run sections and big walls on both side.
On the take out there is also a nice 9 Meter drop called “römerfalls”…..
Kristin Schernthaner entering the Taugl-Gorge …
One of thounsands of must runs…. around every corner you have to hope that there are no trees 😀
Portaging is not always possible…. but great fun if you have to !!!!!
9 meter “Römerfalls ” at the take out

Casper…The Friendly Whitewater Park
The winter here in Colorado has been a long one. Â So long in fact that lately I have spent the countless hours watching kayaking videos and splashing cold water in my face. Â October 28th 2010 marked the last time my ass touched the seat of my Pyranha Molan…until this weekend!
After hearing from my friend Leif Anderson that the whitewater park in Casper, Wyoming was in, I dropped everything headed up to meet him in Fort Collins.  Leif, his fiancee Natalie and I rallied through a savage snow storm on a four and a half hour drive north to Casper for a weekend of freezing cold play-boating.
I want to give a huge shout out to the Schmitt family for hooking up a place to crash, T-roy for letting me borrow his M Molan, John Quartana for the Go-Pro and Leif and Natalie for these photos, hope you enjoy them…edit coming soon!

The Varun
If your looking for a river running playboat and have not had a chance to paddle the Varun yet all I’m saying is you need to try it out!  It’s slowly warming up out there.  Good time to test drive  a boat for the season.  Check here to watch the Varun in action.

1st Place at West-German-Championships
Already at 8 o`clock in the morning many paddlers arrived to practice bevor the competion had started. Fortunately we had great weather, good waterlevel, more than 80 participants and a big party at the local kajakclub, which also offered cake an coffee.
All in all a great event and especially for me, because I landed in 1st place. Already in the prelim I was in 1st place with almost 400 points, but in the
final I could improve myself again and scored 555 points!

2011 Goshen Race Wrap-Up
The 4th Annual Goshen Pass Race is in the books.
High noon on March 13th saw over twenty racers holding on in a boiley, moving eddy below Undercut Rock rapid on Virginia’s Maury River, waiting for the start. We were blessed with a great day for racing: the highest flows yet for the race (1500 cfs) and sunny, seventy-degree weather. I was stoked to finally have another competitor in the Speeder/Wildwater class, and this year also saw the first glass boat in the race (Todd Craft from Richmond, who won the Long Boat class). As usual there was a touch of misfortune, with Trevar B taking home the not-so-coveted Carnage Thong after a valiant but ultimately unsuccesful line through Devil’s Kitchen rapid.
Above: Trevar finds this new addition to his wardrobe to be a perfect fit.
Pyranha was well represented at the event, both as a sponsor and in the field of race boats. Pyranha boats made up well over 2/3 of the field (16 Pyranha boats raced) – a majority of the contestants. Pyranha also dominated the podium, winning the Overall First Place and totally sweeping the popular Short Boat (Creek) Class.
Above: Racers battling through Corner Rapid
Pyranha took the Overall first place with a Speeder in the Wildwater class. It was nice to have another competitor in this exciting class, even if it didn’t last very long. Two Speeders going neck and neck into Devil’s Kitchen will get your blood pumping.
Above: The Speeder coming in for the win. Below: “Flip” Merica awards the Carnage Thong.
The post-race award ceremony was the best yet. Pyranha Kayaks and Appomattox River Company shared the stage as Premier Sponsors of this event. Every contestant was able to walk away with a prize this year, and probably a few kind beers as well. Look for Virginia’s spring paddling season kickoff race to return again next year: First Sunday in March with flows over 600 cfs at 6 a.m. – unless there is creeking going on, of course.
