North Harper Falls Park and Huck

Late summer in the southeast doesn’t leave a whole lot of options for kayaking except on dam release runs. Wanting to get on something new, myself and a small crew went and checked out North Harper Falls, a waterfall in the Upper Wilson Creek Drainage. After a 2 mile hike/bushwack, we found a huge runnable waterfall with a somewhat green landing but after a little scout decided it was good to go even at, oh about 12 cfs.

Turn out the hit was not even that bad, and its a great place to practice paddle tosses and stomping down, because it does want to kick you flat. This would a really awesome, high quality drop with a lot of water, so I am hoping to get back out there this year with water.

Open European Championship Devils Extreme Race 2011

The main czech creeking event took place last week in August. Many competitors (CZE, SVK, SLO, GER, NZL, ITA…) came to Lipno.

The event is my favouritre, because I usually  meet there many friends,  kayakers and competitors!

The men category had better and harder course, but we had slalom like qualification (I gained 2. place) and the main competition was sprint. I placed on 3. place after Anne Hubner and Louise Jull. Men had longer sprint and the winner was Mike Dawson.

On sunday was kayak cross and team sprint, which the Zet kayak team won!

The portage on the Allt Baille a'Mhuilinn burn

After our recent trip to Norway, Gavin and I decided to attempt to run 10 new scottish rivers. We’d had our eye on a small burn called Allt Baille a’Mhuilinn for a few years but had never caught it at the right level. After a typical scottish day of torrential rain we decided to head up to check the level. The burn was just runnable, but as it was still raining hard we decided to get on in the hope it would rise further. Within half an hour the level had went up a further 12 inches which was perfect. We had to portage a 10 m dog leg fall with a shallow landing. We had an amazing day on the water. Here’s a link to the small video I made; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OyTqifZRX8

Hunting for waterfalls in Venezuela

The British Universities Kayak Expedition team are now in the Gran Sabana of Venezuela, on the search for waterfalls. With another 10 days left in Venezuela, we have a few more objectives here in the Gran Sabana before we head to the coast for a few days surfing and then back to the UK, ready for the Wet West Paddle Fest and the start of another year at Uni. Check out the team´s talk/presentation on the Friday night at WWPF.

Check out the team blog for more photos.

Kayaking in Siberia

tom2

Hi people!
I just came back from Siberia. I love this place more then all the others. This time i spend 5 weeks in Siberia and paddled 4 different rivers. On my last river there I paddled a different boat then usually do. The thing is that in Siberia are no kayak stores, or kayak schools and there is no chance to buy a paddling gear. So, the friend of mine dreamed to paddle my Pyranha Burn and i had to let him do this.

Minus Fun on the Ottawa River!

Wow, the summer is coming to an end way too fast. Tomorrow morning is the Ottawa River Rodeo/Canada Cup, and for the first time in years the Garburator wave is at a prime level for the competition.

There have been great levels here on the Ottawa all summer. When the levels drop below zero on the gauge some of the best play features come out – Garb, Pushbutton, Babyface, Corner Wave and Horseshoe. This season we have been able to play on all of these features for months. These are the water levels that have made the Ottawa River famous = Minus Fun!

Tomorrow’s competition should be a great show with a number of the best Canadian, U.S and other international team members hanging around the area. The OKS Keeners will likely have a substantial representation as well. The Ottawa River is also host to the “King of Clubs” festivities taking place this weekend. This is a great community event as clubs from all over Ontario compete in numerous on and off water contests to crown the “king” or best kayaking club.

It’s a great weekend to be on the Ottawa whether you’re here to compete, play or just spectate. I am very much looking forward to being out on the warm, fun waters of the Ottawa River!

California Softcore

In early June I realized that I was going to have time for a little western adventure this summer. Having paddled a good bit in Colorado in the past, California was at the forefront of my mind. California in summer is on every creekboaters wish list and after years of missing out, I finally got my first taste this year. With all the hardcore trip reports from California lately, it kinda has me feeling like a slacker. Our quickie trip to California this summer was not hardcore. It was, however, fun and picturesque and certainly wetted my appetite for future California adventures.
