As my winter season is quickly coming to an end here at Alta Utah I am getting more and more fired up for the 2011 kayak season. This is the end to a very epic year and the beginning of an even better one. With Pyranha kayaks leading the charge in whitewater I can’t help, but be excited for what’s next.Â

The Snake River Adventure
After 24 hours travelling to Salt Lake City, Utah for the annual Outdoor Retailer show, what was the obvious thing to do? Hire the biggest truck Enterprise had in their fleet, load up the brand spanking new Pyranha Varun and head north to the Snake River for a day out boating of course!
The opportunity to paddle in the US and get a photo shoot done for our new boat was surely going to be worth the 5 hour road trip through 3 states….

Trashcan Falls Dawn Patrol
The recent rain in North Carolina came at about the most inconvenient time, in the middle of midterms. Desperate times call for desperate measures, so myself and Tyler Mayo got up before sunrise and headed 15 minutes down the road from Boone to trashcan falls. We got there before the sun rose, waited for it to get light enough, and started running laps. 2 hours later, I was back at school sitting in chemistry lab. Enjoy the pics:

Low Water Session at Plattling Wave
Two weeks ago I spent a weekend with some friends in Plattling. Unfortunately we had a very low a water-level (155cm), so it was more difficult to do loops or spacegozillas. But we had a great weekend anyway and now we should be well prepared for German championships (especially if we will have such a water-level again).

Introducing myself!
Hello everyone! My name is Eric Walter, I´m from Germany, I´m 17 years old and recently joined Team Pyranha. I don´t want to bore you with a very long text about myself, due to that I took some old footage from 2010 and cut a promotional video for the Molan ! I hope you enjoy it.
The video of my last weekend in Plattling is coming today, too.

Northwest Waterfall Tour
One month ago I bought a ticket to Portland with the plan of running a couple rivers throughout Oregon. Currently I am more then halfway though my nine day trip and I have rune more vertical feet than most people have run in their life.
The first day I got picked up from the airport after waking up at 3am to get on the plane. We quickly drove to Eagle Creek and Kyle Hull and I ran 35 foot Punchbowl falls and 90 foot Metlako falls. It was around 6.00 when we ran the falls so the light was too low to film.![]()
The next day I ran Upper and Lower Bridal Veil Falls. The Upper drop was supposedly navigated twice before. The Upper falls is about 60 feet with an auto-boof halfway down. The bottom drop is a 30 to 40 foot slide. I scouted the drop briefly and decided to run it. The lip of the top drop was gigantic. The crowd at the bottom had to be 100 feet down. Luckily I had great lines on both drops.
After, John Hyland, Kyle Hull, and I traveled to the Little White Salmon. This classic creek is a gem. The water was high, but nonetheless we headed down the river. This has to be my new favorite creek. Kyle and I ran every rapid including Sprit falls, a monstrous 30 footer with a very dangerous rapid called chaos right after. We both had good lines.
The next two days were spent Southeast of Hood River on the Mckenzie River. Kyle hull and I ended up running 75 foot Koosah falls and 85-foot Sahalie Falls. Both had difficult lips. Our lines were good though.
After that, John, Kyle, and I went to Celestial falls, a clean fifty footer. We ran our boats in, hoping not to get spotted by the locals and we were successful. Celestial falls is a great drop for an introduction to hucking.
The last day I was in Oregon I went back to Eagle Creek. My goal was to run Metlako 5-8 times in a day. The water was ridiculously high the morning I woke up. I hiked up to check out Metlako Falls and it looked pretty good. I ran back down to the car, did the two-mile hike with my boat, above Metlako and started hucking. I ended up running this infamous 102-foot drop 6 times that day. The only battle scar I came out with was a gash and a black eye.
It definitely was not fun leaving this amazing place. The quality of waterfalls and rivers is astounding. Hopefully I will get to go back this year.

Kayak Season 2011: Day 1…Done
Here in the Adirondacks (Waaay up in northern New York) we have seasons. The boats get put away sometime around Thanksgiving, we go skiing for a few months,  and by the end of March they start to make their way back on to ice cold rivers.  Right now we are finishing one season, and heading full speed ahead into another.Â

Please call first, jackets required
Well the east got hammered with rain, add to that the warming days and snow melt. And that has brought the Susquehanna river to “biblical levels” as Brad from Starrk Moon would say. The flows are around 500,000 plus CFS. That is more than twice the average flow over the lip of Niagara falls. So as any good boater would we got a group together to see what we could find. Jeremy Laucks, the Smith boys Toffer and Tim,Brian Cox and myself put on just below the Holtwood dam and made our way down to the islands below the Normanwood bridge, catching some massive waves and dodging huge holes along the way. As we scouted the area looking for the best waves. We saw that the group of onlookers from the bridge now included the PA state police. We gave them the head tap sign that we were ok and pealed out headed to the bear trap channel. As Jeremy is throwing a pan am the State police helicopter came over the island hovered shouting over the pa asking if we were in distress? After a few more head taps and rides and several passes of the chopper the word from the pa was now “Exit the river immediately ,exit the river immediately ” . Now not wanting to anger anyone we made our way to the take out and were met by eight of PA’s finest state police. They informed us a flare was seen and we were the ones presumed to be in need of saving. A short exchange of ID’s and we were left with a note asking that “Before you go next time give us the heads up PSP Lancaster station (717)299-7650.”
This is your public service announcement please call so you can save yourself the gut pains that come from paddling up to eight troopers and parking lot full of EMS units who don’t look really happy with you. Stay safe and have fun. Matt Samms

Pennsylvania’s “Powder Hole” First Descent

Check out this article I wrote for Canoe and Kayak Magazine about my first descent of “The Powder Hole” on the Wapwallopen Creek in Northeast PA. Here is a link to Jeremy Laucks video on Facebook. I had a solid crew with me on a very cold day. Ive been wanting to run the falls for a long time. Thanks to all that came out and made it as sweet as possible! More rain coming to the area. Getting fired up for Spring! Happy Boating.
