Well the east got hammered with rain, add to that the warming days and snow melt. And that has brought the Susquehanna river to “biblical levels” as Brad from Starrk Moon would say. The flows are around 500,000 plus CFS. That is more than twice the average flow over the lip of Niagara falls. So as any good boater would we got a group together to see what we could find. Jeremy Laucks, the Smith boys Toffer and Tim,Brian Cox and myself put on just below the Holtwood dam and made our way down to the islands below the Normanwood bridge, catching some massive waves and dodging huge holes along the way. As we scouted the area looking for the best waves. We saw that the group of onlookers from the bridge now included the PA state police. We gave them the head tap sign that we were ok and pealed out headed to the bear trap channel. As Jeremy is throwing a pan am the State police helicopter came over the island hovered shouting over the pa asking if we were in distress? After a few more head taps and rides and several passes of the chopper the word from the pa was now “Exit the river immediately ,exit the river immediately ” . Now not wanting to anger anyone we made our way to the take out and were met by eight of PA’s finest state police. They informed us a flare was seen and we were the ones presumed to be in need of saving. A short exchange of ID’s and we were left with a note asking that “Before you go next time give us the heads up PSP Lancaster station (717)299-7650.”
This is your public service announcement please call so you can save yourself the gut pains that come from paddling up to eight troopers and parking lot full of EMS units who don’t look really happy with you. Stay safe and have fun. Matt Samms

Pennsylvania’s “Powder Hole” First Descent
Check out this article I wrote for Canoe and Kayak Magazine about my first descent of “The Powder Hole” on the Wapwallopen Creek in Northeast PA. Here is a link to Jeremy Laucks video on Facebook. I had a solid crew with me on a very cold day. Ive been wanting to run the falls for a long time. Thanks to all that came out and made it as sweet as possible! More rain coming to the area. Getting fired up for Spring! Happy Boating.

My First Post . . .
This is my first post for Pyranha Kayaks but I have been affiliated with this company for some time now. Â Working for the U.S. distributor in Asheville this past summer was an amazing experience and I learned a lot about the industry. Â Boating in Asheville taught me to take advantage of the local creeks and rivers around the area when they are flowing. Â Now I’m back home for school in Pennsylvania and work part-time but still find some time to get out and explore some new runs. Â Anyways I enjoy making videos and here are two that I recently edited . . .
The first video is an advertisement for a feature-length film uploaded for free on a website I started with a couple of friends. Â You can view the entire film here at – River Left Productions. Â I also submitted the video for Rider of the Year: Best Online Film and you can view it here – Rider of the Year.
The second video is a little edit I put together after a nice surf session out at Holtwood on Beartrap. Â Holtwood has been my home play park all my life and it’s what I grew up on. Â This amazing playground for boating is being renovated and for more information you should refer to Matt’s earlier post regarding arrangements with PPL click here- Holtwood Whitewater Park.
Photo from last year at Beartrap –
When the Susquehanna is above 6 ft there is usually something going on, when it is super high then that’s when it gets good. Â Also, everyone out was either in Varun or Molan and got some incredible rides. Â Thanks a lot Pyranha for two great boats!
Peace out,
Brenton

Park & Huck Classic
Still soo cold… but there is this Rapid called “Stromboding-Waterfall” in upper Austria , which you can paddle at low waterlevels in early spring.. the waterfall itself is not extremly difficult, but has a tricky entrance and a big undercut at the base of the fall.
very nice … !

Second descent of the Las Truchas
Las Truchas river lies in the upper reaches of the Nuble River valley in region VIII of Chile. The first descent was completed in 2007, and the second and third descents in 2010.  Due to its remote location it is off the radar of most kayaking trips done in Chile. However it is with out a doubt one of the best multi-day river trips in the country.  Our trip started with a run down Las Sauces river, the main tributary to the Nuble. We camped that night at the confluence expecting the arrival of the cowboys who would transport our boats and gear to the put-in of the Las Truchas.
After one full day of hiking we arrived at the put-in to rest for the night looking forward to the next day.
For me it does not get any better than waking up loading my boat knowing all I need to do for the day is kayak. The river was at a perfect level for 7 hours of boulder garden boofing!
Although the logistics for this run seem difficult it could not be any easier for such a high quality multi-day trip. The unfortunate reality is that construction has already begun on one of two dams threatening the Nuble River.  Like many rivers in Chile once completed the landscape will be changed forever.
