Busy Weekend at the New England Whitewater Triple Crown

The one thing that I enjoy least about freestyle competitions is driving a long way to wait around for a really long time to compete for a total of two minutes (ok…4 minutes if you make the finals, maybe 6 minutes if it’s a really big competition).  This past weekend the New England Whitewater Triple …

“We Broke Several Oars and Most of the Ten Commandments”

For 25 days our world existed within the shelter of the Grand Canyon’s walls, thousands of feet below the rim. Nearly a mile above us, the rest of the world continued to move at its blistering fast, distracted pace.  At river level, for 25 glorious days, 15 people were lucky enough to slow down, focus on the present, and live the …

Getting Ready for the Big Ditch

To run the classic of all classics takes preparation.  I first got invited on this Grand Canyon trip back in May, and tomorrow I am finally departing.  In one way or another I have been getting my S#%* together for about six months. I have stuffed everything a person could ever …

All In One Week

It was pretty wild for those of us that live in Northern New York this week.  It’s hard to believe we got a foot of snow before Halloween.  On Monday we were mountain biking on all the wonderful trails around Lake Placid, on Wednesday we were skiing, and on Saturday the rivers came up from …

Hurry Up…There’s Still Water in Maine

There is still a lot of water flowing in Maine right now. I managed to squeeze a trip up there over the weekend. The Gulf Hagas was by far my favorite of the three runs we got on. What a classic. Some clean vertical stuff, some sweet boulder gardens, and one rapid with some serious …

Am I Gonna Need Snowshoes For This Run?

You know it’s spring time in the Adirondacks when people are trying to decide what is more important to stuff in the back of your boat: A breakdown paddle or snowshoes. It’s been a spring to remember up here lots of runs on the Boquet, John’s Brook, and the Branch amongst others. The highlight came …

Mid-Winter New York Update

While everyone is travelling around to warm climates and tropical destinations, I have been braving the winter up here in New York’s Adirondack moiuntains. We started off with a ton of snow in December and the early part of January. Last week’s warm temps and rain opened up some January paddling for those that were …

Pre-Halloween Gift…Inner City Strife

The weather gods smiled brightly over the northeast last weekend when Inner City Strife wave came in. The rain didn’t quite hit the the right spots for the steep stuff to come in, but we had a great wave to surf as a fall back plan.

US Wildwater Nationals

I took the Speeder to US Wildwater Nationals on the Deerfiled River over the weekend.  It was different kind of competition for me.  I had a great time, and took down the rest of the plastic boats with the help of my good friend the Speeder.
