My Last Days in Norway

I closed out my month of working and paddling in Norway with a lot of work, and even more paddling.  Two highlights were the Bovra Gorge and the Lower Rauma. The whole trip completely blew my mind.  The paddling was great, the work was plentiful, and the rafting was fun.  I was fortunate enough to meet up with fellow Pyranha man Ric Moxon from the U.K. for most of the missions.

Paddling in Western New York

dscf4168

Most times when I return home to visit my family in Buffalo, NY I just stash my kayaks in the backyard and figure they will sit there unused for a couple of weeks.  Because I never knew whitewater kayaking existed as a sport while I lived there, I assumed that there was no whitewater in the area other than the obvious Niagara Falls.  While Western NY may not be the next mecca of whitewater paddling, there certainly are opportunities to paddle some fun stuff even at the end of August without any significant rainfall.

Take to the Tees 2009

Over the weekend Richard Brooks and I went over to the Tees Barrage in Stockton for a massive watersports festival aimed at getting people into watersports in the Teesside area. As well as loads of displays on the water including jetskis, power boats and water skiing they also put on a series of come and try it sessions for free.

Most of the people at the event had never had a chance to try kayaking or canoeing before and the queues for the sessions was massive all day and sold out pretty quickly. It was really great to see so many young kids excited by water sports and our boats on the stand were a big attraction all day.

Paddle train is my last mission – Movie trailer

_mg_5211
Paddle train is my last mission. During two weeks four paddlers travelled only with train around in Norway to paddle some of the best white water you can fins along the railway. Rivers like Raundalselvi, MoldÃ¥i, Ustekveikja, UstenÃ¥i, Driva and Rauma gave us fantastic a fantastic time, and a way harder mission than we expected. We only brought what we could carry in our kayaks. No extra clothes or shoes. Just one dry sett in the back of the boat together with a sleeping bag and a term a-rest…
On the mission was Lukas Wielatt, Ron Fischer, Tomass Marnics and Benjamin Hjort. The movie is filmed, edited and copyrighted to Benjamin Hjort.

Last Stop on the Road Trip: Norway

The big hit on the Upper Driva (photo: Pat Clissold)

The final destination for our summer road trip was Norway, my first visit to Northern Europe’s whitewater Mecca, but certainly not my last.  Bex and I spent an incredible few weeks in Southern Norway, firstly being shown the classics around Sjoa and Otta, and then joining up with a couple of other British boaters to catch a few other late season runs.  There have been plenty of posts about the quality of Norway’s whitewater rivers, so I’ll spare the words and just leave you with some photos from our travels in Norway. Independence Day in Cheesman Canyon

It was only our second day in Colorado, but it was shaping up to be a long one.  It was almost ten o’clock and we were already supposed to be at the put-in, but instead we were stashing a bike behind some bushes at the Corral Creek trailhead.  The shuttle plan was to hike our boats and gear 3.5 miles up Corral Creek trail from the river to the bike.  Then someone would ride the single speed mountain bike the 17 miles back to the truck to retrieve it for the rest of the group.  Without a doubt it was going to be a long day, but for our crew it was our chosen celebration of Independence Day.

Joey Jarrell, Jordan Sherman, Matt Wallace, and I (Adam Goshorn) had departed Chattanooga, Tennessee in the afternoon two days earlier.  We drove 22 hours straight through and immediately put on Clear Creek of the Arkansas outside Buena Vista, Colorado.  After a couple laps we began setting up camp at the take-out and putting the plan in place for the following day.  Calls to friends confirmed that Cheesman Canyon had well above the minimum recommended water level and the call was made to schedule access through the private land at the put-in.  Moments later we were joined by longtime friend Mike Tavares, who had driven up to meet us after getting off work in Salida.  Mike and I went up for another quick lap on Clear Creek before joining the rest of the group for the first of many campfires, beers, and good times our visit to Colorado would include.

Paddling the South Platte through Cheesman Canyon was high on our “hit list” for our time in Colorado this summer.  This section of river didn’t see boatable flows often and didn’t seem to get paddled that often when it did.  However, several things we had heard about this section sounded particularly inviting to us.  First, that the access issues of past with Sportsman’s Paradise, a private community at the put-in, had been resolved through an agreement set up by American Whitewater.  Secondly, that the granite landscape was reminiscent of California, but with a much shorter drive.
