Biography

I started paddling at a young age in the front of a tandem canoe (with my dad in the stern) on class II streams in my home state of Virginia, USA. I always loved being on the river and that interest was further solidified by attending a summer camp program that taught whitewater canoeing and specifically focused on multi-day canoe tripping. The highlight of each summer for me was when we would spend 5-day and 4-nights paddling down the James River and camping along the way.

In high school I started to be able to paddle more often as my friends and I were able to drive ourselves to the river and my focus turned more towards wanting to progress at whitewater paddling. In pursuit of that goal I eventually switched to a kayak in 2000 while in college at Radford University where I majored in Outdoor Recreation. Kayaking quickly became my driving passion and I have been paddling around 150 days a year ever since.

I am currently the director of an outdoor experiential education center on Lookout Mountain in the northeast corner of Alabama. The location provides excellent local paddling for much of the year and the job schedule allows time for trips elsewhere in the winter and summer. I have been paddling for Pyranha since 2006 and Immersion Research since 2008.

Dominican Republic – Part IV: Staircase Section of the Rio Jimenoa

In December of 2015 Matthew Beauchamp, Steve Krajewski, Shannon Goshorn, and I headed to the island of Hispaniola to check out the rivers of the Dominican Republic. Although the island was experiencing a pattern of dry weather, we still found options to paddle daily and enjoyed a great time in this lesser known paddling destination.  …

Colorado 2015 – Part I: Browns Canyon and Clear Creek

This year’s trip out west began like they all do, with a long drive through the night, across the flat plains in the middle of the country.  With a dismal snow pack in the PNW and California, our sights were set on Colorado again this year.  John Kern and I made the normally 22-hour drive …

A Grand Canyon Christmas

For the fifth time in six years, in December 2014 I found myself climbing into a Pyranha boat and sliding into the waters of the Colorado River at Lees Ferry, Arizona.  Previously I’ve paddled the Grand Canyon with raft-support in an Everest, Burn II, and Shiva; and one self-support trip in the Fusion.  This time …

Below: Adam Goshorn on Short Creek, photo by Shannon Goshorn Fresh off a winter Grand Canyon trip, I probably should be working on sorting pictures and video from that trip.  However, ever since I arrived back to my home the opportunities for great boating have kept me happily distracted!  The XL Burn III was …
