Holtwood action

Well the rain has brought the Susquehanna river up and the Holtwood section has gotten some use. Holtwood is a great spot and everchanging the hydro dam can change the water level several feet in just a few minutes. This area serves up some great rides. check out

“1st Sick Line Extreme Race” in Oetz

Hi!

Last weekend the 1st Sick Line Extreme Race was held on the infamous Wellerbruecke part of the Oetz in Austria. It was a protest event in order to stop the plans of a local hydropower company to dam the river. 45 top paddlers from 7 nations took part in the two  races, one sprint and one slalom run. Both times were added in order to find a winner, who in the end was Claus Suchanek, 2nd Thilo Schitt and 3rd Michel Herde. In the very close result (the first three were within one second!), I was able to finish on 6th place, which I’m quite happy about, as I had to roll once at the bottom drop in my sprint run. Altogether it was a great event that hopefully will be continued to be held every year now.

West Coast Afternoon mission….

The wild west coast of New Zealand is real adventure boating. An afternoon boating is often a multi-sport experience. Hokitika local Tim Abbott and his brother Mike, hit the Styx at nice levels.

Big Day on the Raven Fork

The Raven Fork is a beautiful class V+ tributary of the Oconaluftee river located just outside of the Cherokee Indian Reservation in North Carolina. Much of the run flows through the Great Smokey National Park on the border of Tenessee and North Carolina. The take out is on the reservation at the home of Emanuel, a great friend to the kayakers who come there. The scenery on the run is unbelieveable, and if you ever get the chance to look around and focus on anything other than the continuously steep pool drop rapids, you can really feel the natural beauty! REad more and check out some pictures from the run….

Dominica Paddling

I just got back to the states from a sweet paddling trip to Dominica. Not to be confused with the Dominican Republic, Dominica is a small country in the Southern Caribbean. It the Island where they filmed Priates of the Caribbean. It is roughly the size of New York City, but it has over 300 rivers and a peak elevation of 5,000 feet. Naturally, we decided to go check out the rivers and waterfalls. I went with 3 other paddlers and a writer/photographer from Outside Magazine to see what we could find.
