When Sam broke the news that our summer exploration of East Africa would be put on hold for a couple of major shoulder operations, I had to quickly find a new summer plan.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"16m Kitoy - Max Bilbow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/IMG_4562.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/IMG_4562.JPG\" alt=\"16m Kitoy - Max Bilbow\" width=\"360\" height=\"540\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t remember if it was my idea or if someone else put it into my head but I decided a thorough exploration of Siberian Russia might quench my desire.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Transport in Altai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/IMGP0246.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/IMGP0246.JPG\" alt=\"Transport in Altai\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Deciding that the best way to do this at such short notice was to find some Russians who already knew their way around, I came across <a href=\"http:\/\/kayakussr.com\" target=\"_blank\">Kayak USSR<\/a> and Vasilii Porsev.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Vasilii Porsev\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/13839_162472907890_510522890_2857124_1136873_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-4667 centered   aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/13839_162472907890_510522890_2857124_1136873_n.jpg\" alt=\"Vasilii Porsev\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kayak USSR run several trips in Russia and the former USSR from May to October and in return for my help and expertise on the river (and a little bit of cross-promotion; found <a title=\"Kayak USSR\" href=\"http:\/\/kayakussr.com\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>) Vasilii agreed to let me tag along for 6 weeks of the Summer.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Sliding into the choosman\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/IMGP1620.JPG\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Max1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/IMGP1712.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-4556 centered  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/IMGP1712.JPG\" alt=\"Max1\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My adventure began as soon as I landed in Irkutsk, with a 10 day self-supported expedition on the Kitoy River.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Fat Camp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/P7191381.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/P7191381.JPG\" alt=\"Fat Camp\" width=\"405\" height=\"540\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This incredible remote river, in the heart of Eastern Siberia, involved a variety of white water, ranging from class 3 to 5+, and a fair amount of physical endurance!<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"16m in Sayan\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/max-16m.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/max-16m.JPG\" alt=\"16m in Sayan\" width=\"405\" height=\"540\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"16m in Sayan\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/max-16m.JPG\"><\/a><em>Above: Max Bilbow paddles the 15m fall on the Ehe-Gol<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Ehe-Gol and Beluty are tributaries to the Kitoy and incorporate some of the most amazing continuous creeking I&#8217;ve seen outside of Norway, making the full day&#8217;s hike in worth the effort.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Pashka firing it up for the last waterfall run\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/P8100647.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-4557 centered  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/P8100647.JPG\" alt=\"Pashka firing it up for the last waterfall run\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The second part of this trip meant catching the Trans-Siberia railway to Novosibirsk and driving to Russia&#8217;s Altai region; a trip jam-packed with a huge variety of white water and shenanigans.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Is it a Pyranha?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/IMGA0002_2.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-4559 centered  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/IMGA0002_2.JPG\" alt=\"Is it a Pyranha?\" width=\"540\" height=\"303\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And angry fish.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Majoy Gorge\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/P8010348.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-4560 centered  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/P8010348.JPG\" alt=\"Majoy Gorge\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My favourite Altai river (above) is the Majoy Gorge. 10km of solid class 4 and 10km of class 4\/5 are separated only by a fantastically terrifying and committing class 5 canyon.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Karnali in Russia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/IMG_0181.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-4563 centered  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/IMG_0181.JPG\" alt=\"Karnali in Russia\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a few days sessioning the Majoy, it had become, in my mind, one of those great home runs, comparable to Norway&#8217;s Aamot Gorge on the Sjoa River.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-4554 centered   aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/IMGP1620.JPG\" alt=\"Sliding into the choosman\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And even though shortly after the above photo was taken\u00c2\u00a0I managed to break myself sliding into the water, I was able to limp down the rest of the river to film Vasillii running the last big waterfalls of the trip&#8230;
