This year, participants from Ireland, UK, Spain, Austria, Germany, Poland, Netherlands, and America headed over for one of Europe\u2019s biggest kayaking events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From world-class athletes to weekend warriors and club paddlers, there\u2019s something for everyone during this jam-packed 3 days!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Freestyle\nFriday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event kicked off with a bang over in Tuam, where around 170 athletes, including several world-class freestyle paddlers, showcased their skills. During the day it was a jam-format, where each paddler had 2 minutes to score as many points as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The banks were full of spectators as paddlers battled it out, trying to make it to the top 10 and through to the flood-lit finals. There were big moves and impressive rides put down, making for an inspiring and exciting event, for both competitors and spectators!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Men\u2019s Results:<\/strong><br>1st &#8211; Quim Fontan\u00e9 Mas\u00f3 &#8211; 1530<br>2nd &#8211; Robert Crowe &#8211; 1445<br>3rd &#8211; David McClure &#8211; 1315<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Women\u2019s Results:<\/strong><br>1st &#8211; Ottilie Robinson-Shaw &#8211; 730<br>2nd &#8211; Sage Donnelly &#8211; 340<br>3rd &#8211; Lowri Davies &#8211; 310<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Speedy\nSaturday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roughly 300 competitors headed on over to the Boluisce River on Saturday morning for the individual time-trials, attempting to paddle the whitewater stretch (which finishes in the sea) as fast as possible. Crowds gathered at the final bridge, cheering as paddlers took on the last, chunky rapid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"772\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/ECF576F8-69E0-472B-AE85-FE2E70F1C551-1024x772.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21645\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/ECF576F8-69E0-472B-AE85-FE2E70F1C551-1024x772.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/ECF576F8-69E0-472B-AE85-FE2E70F1C551-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/ECF576F8-69E0-472B-AE85-FE2E70F1C551-768x579.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/ECF576F8-69E0-472B-AE85-FE2E70F1C551.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the stormy weather didn&#8217;t seem to dampen anyone\u2019s enthusiasm, with some paddlers even continuing into the sea for a surf (or a trashing!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Men\u2019s Results:<\/strong><br>1st &#8211; Nick Bennett &#8211; 05:33.937 <em>&#8211; New Course Record!<\/em><br>2nd &#8211; Lucien Schreiber &#8211; 05:44.667<br>3rd &#8211; Jack Ledwith &#8211; 05:45:122<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Women\u2019s Results:<\/strong><br>1st &#8211; Sage Donnelly &#8211; 05:58.91<br>2nd &#8211; Aoife Hanrahan &#8211; 05:59.328<br>3rd &#8211; Cara Lee &#8211; 06:04:736<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Party-Time!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 80\u2019s-themed night started with arcade games at the <em>Electric <\/em>bar in Galway centre<em>, <\/em>before paddlers clad in bright-coloured leotards and leg warmers moved up to the exclusive-use upper level, ready to show off their dance moves! A good time was had, with probably a few sore heads the next morning!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stampede\nSunday <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The highlight for many paddlers and spectators\nthis weekend was likely to be the boater-x event. Thanks to the amazing amount of support from many brands and companies, the prizes up for grabs included a tonne of gear, (beer!), clothes, event entries, and even coaching. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_3834-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21646\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_3834-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_3834-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_3834-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_3834-1536x2048.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.pyranha.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_3834-scaled.jpeg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The local paddling community also dedicated two\nawards as memorials for local paddlers and friends, Alex McGourty and David Higgins, who\ntragically lost their lives whilst paddling in South America two years ago.\nThese two individuals were a huge part of the local community and their memory\nwill continue to live on through the event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Massive congratulations to all participants, volunteers and organisers! Galway Fest is an incredible event, which is likely to continue growing over the coming years. The range of events means that all levels of paddler can get involved and have a great time!
