"Pyranha - Providing strength to your padding"
Our Connect 30 grab handles are made of really strong stuff and you need to know.
Climbing grade webbing sewn for us by Wild Country to climbing sling standards onto hardware designed by us and manufactured by DMM.
Both of these names will be familiar as manufacturers of premium quality climbing gear. We use webbing because it's easier on the hands than a metal bar and being flexible help you grip it in situations where the kayak may be moving such as in a stopper.
Our grab handles are designed to stand up at all times making them instantly grab-able which as you know is especially important in rescues where there may only be once chance to attach a Karabiner.
The webbing is sewn into a loop. If one end fails the other attachment will remain effective. Compare this to a single bar and if one end fails, it leaves the whole system open and insecure!
"It is good climbing practise not to attach metal to metal"
The reason behind this is that an unlocked karabiner in certain situations can unclip, using a webbing handle reduces the possibilty of a karabiner twisting and unclipping itself. We also considered this problem when designing our metal rescue points which have been kept small so that a karabiner once clipped on is restricted in the amount it can move around.
When we are connecting our handles to our Connect 30 kayaks we always drill a hole, put a bolt through and place a nut/plate on the underside. This makes the attachment much stronger than moulding an insert into the shell of the boat and simply bolting into that. The Pyranha system gives us a minimum of 800kgs load capacity which is roughly 3x more than any insert is capable of achieving.
The process we use is difficult to achieve and simply means getting into the ends of the boat and attaching the nut to the bolt by hand. The reason we go to this trouble is because bolting through a kayak is significantly stronger than using inserts.
Pyranha are the only manufacturer not to use inserts on top end kayaks.
